1. Adjust the power tool setting - Most cordless drills come with settings for different levels of variable speed, and we know you may always be tempted to use the highest available speed, so the job gets faster. If you consider your drill battery, it is better to adjust the speed to a lower level sufficient enough to get the job done.
2. Avoid overcharging - Some drill batteries like the Nickel Metal Hydride and Nickel Cadmium batteries are built so that you can leave them in their chargers, but if your drill instruction guide does not say you should store it in a charger, try as much as possible to keep it from overcharging.
3. Fully charge the battery - When you use your power tool until the batteries are low or drained, it is better to charge it until it is full. There are battery chargers that would indicate when a battery is fully charged; If you run a Lithium-ion battery, you may not necessarily have to charge them all the time fully.
4. Keep a backup battery - Even if your corded drill already comes with one battery, it is not wrong to have a spare which you can switch up while you are on the job. It is essential to get one immediately after the battery you are using begins to show a sign of weakness, so you don’t entirely drain the lifespan of one battery. A backup would help you extend the lives of both batteries, and also give your job a smoother run.
A: Drill battery over time degrades and eventually stops working. In fact the battery from its very first charge begins a very slow process that causes the battery to cease from functioning. Collectively the process is called battery degradation and power loss and it includes the following: declining capacity, increasing internal resistance, elevated self-discharge, and premature voltage cut-off on discharge.
Keep tools battery away from heat and metal accessories; Give a full discharge and charge every month during storage time, please let battery cool down when to try use or charge it; Please don't stay battery on the charger or tools unless in charging or working.
It really depends on the type of battery and how you use/store them. But a good rule of thumb is you can expect about 2-3 years out of most cordless power tool battery types.
That would depend on both your battery charger and power tools. A lot of chargers will charge Ni-MH batteries, and a few others will charge Li-Ion batteries. However, even if your charger will do this, your drill might not. It is best to check the user manual or contact the manufacturer to find out the technical specs of your model.
Li-Ion tool batteries do have a cycle life of up to 1,900 cycles. Generally though the Li-Ion cells will last 2 – 3 years before needing to be replaced.
